Rusty's Supersimple Photo School for the Photographically Challenged

Excercise #1: Understanding Depth of Field

Depth of Field is one of the most fundamental concepts in photography and
is very simple. 'Field' is what's in focus, and Depth is how
deep the focus zone is. Using the 'Aperture Priority' exposure mode
(Usually the letter A on your camera's MODE DIAL),
you can control the depth of field.

Use your camera's CONTROL DIAL to change the aperture value
(expressed in f/numbers).

At smaller apertures (higher F/numbers), almost the whole image is in focus:
f/8 | 1/13s

At larger apertures (smaller f/numbers), only a small selected part of the frame is in focus:
f/1.7 | 1/250s

Both shots were taken with a 50mm lens, with available light at ISO 400
Depth of field is also controlled by the focal length and distance to subject. We'll get to that later.
